These are the numbers that do the weighting. They are not our estimate of what the exam contains - they are Cisco's own statement of it, which is what makes a readiness figure derived from them something you can check rather than something you have to trust.
What happens to your answers
Between submitting a paper and seeing a ranked list, four things happen. None of them involves a language model deciding what you are bad at.
Each question is assigned to exactly one domain
Every item on the paper carries a primary domain, assigned by hand against Cisco's topic list, plus optional secondary domains that count for coverage only. Exactly one primary per question, so no question can be double-counted into two domains and inflate both.
The map is versioned against the blueprint it was built for. A map built for v1.1 is never silently reused against a different blueprint, because a taxonomy that no longer matches the exam produces confident, wrong advice - the failure mode that is worse than no advice at all.
Mastery is computed per domain
Correct over seen, inside each domain. If the paper served you the whole 103 questions and you left some blank, those blanks are scored as incorrect - the same treatment exam day gives them. On a capped preview that only ever showed part of the paper, untouched questions are excluded instead, because you were never offered them.
Readiness is the blueprint-weighted combination
The denominator is the measured weight rather than a flat 100. A domain the paper never asked about is excluded from both sums instead of counting as a zero, so an untested domain cannot pull your readiness down. That is what makes the number a statement about the CCNA rather than about this particular paper.
Domains are ranked by weight times shortfall
This is the step that makes the output a plan instead of a report. It converts "I am weak here" into "this is costing me this many marks", and on a blueprint as uneven as the CCNA's, the two orderings routinely disagree.
Alongside the ranking, each domain reports how many of the questions you missed in it carry an Exam Tip or a set of tip cards, and how many questions on that domain exist in the rest of the pack, excluding the paper you just sat. So "study IP Connectivity next" arrives with the count of material actually available to study it with, rather than as an instruction with nothing behind it.
Why IP Connectivity is usually the best place to start
Run the arithmetic across enough CCNA attempts and one domain surfaces first far more often than chance would explain. IP Connectivity is 25% of the exam - a quarter, and the single heaviest domain - so a shortfall there is multiplied by the largest number in the blueprint. A candidate at 50% in IP Connectivity carries a priority of 1250. To generate that same priority in IP Services, at 10%, you would have to score below zero.
That is not a quirk of the arithmetic. It is the arithmetic telling you something true about the CCNA: routing is where the exam lives, and a candidate who is comfortable everywhere except routing is not a candidate who is nearly ready. It is also why "I got 72%" is such a poor description of a CCNA result - the same 72% is a fortnight of work or a weekend, depending entirely on which quarter of the blueprint is missing.

Pooling across the CCNA paper family
There are five live 200-301 papers, and sitting more than one raises a question a single-paper score cannot answer: where do you stand on the certification, not on any one paper?
The cert-level view answers it by pooling per-domain evidence across every CCNA paper you have attempted, then running the same weighting over the pooled totals. Two rules keep that honest:
- Latest sitting per paper, not best. If you sat paper 1 three times, the most recent attempt is the one that contributes. Taking your best historical sitting of each paper would produce a flattering number that describes a version of you that no longer exists. The pooled view is meant to report where you stand today.
- Retired papers are excluded from coverage totals. A deprecated paper still gets a domain map, because someone who sat it deserves a study path from it. But it does not count toward "how much material exists on this domain", because you cannot go and drill it.
Pooling also fixes the small-sample problem. A single paper might only ask you eight Automation questions, which is a thin basis for a verdict. Across four papers that becomes thirty-odd, and the reading firms up. The ranking gets more trustworthy the more you sit, which is the opposite of how a bare score behaves.

What v2.0 changes in February 2027
CCNA 200-301 v2.0 goes live on 3 February 2027, and v1.1's last day is 2 February 2027. The exam number does not change, so there is no overlap window - one day it is the old blueprint, the next day the new one. v2.0 reorganises six domains into five, with troubleshooting verbs returning and Automation and Programmability dissolved into a broader operations domain.
None of that changes the method. What it changes is the constant the method runs on, and that is versioned deliberately: a domain map is stamped with the blueprint version it was built against, and a map built for one version is never reused for another. Attempts you sat against v1.1 keep their v1.1 weights, so your history stays internally comparable instead of silently re-scoring itself overnight.

Frequently asked questions
How is CCNA readiness calculated?
Every question is mapped to one of Cisco's six domains, mastery is computed per domain as correct over seen, and those are combined as the sum of weight times mastery over the sum of the weights of the domains the paper actually tested. The weights are Cisco's published v1.1 figures: Network Fundamentals 20%, Network Access 20%, IP Connectivity 25%, IP Services 10%, Security Fundamentals 15%, Automation and Programmability 10%.
Which domain should I study first?
Whichever has the highest weight multiplied by shortfall - which is frequently IP Connectivity, since at 25% it is the heaviest domain on the blueprint and any weakness there is multiplied by the largest number available. Do not pick by lowest percentage alone: a 64% in a 15% domain is a more expensive gap than a 75% in a 10% domain, and picking by score gets that backwards.
Why is my readiness different from my score?
The score counts questions on the paper in front of you; readiness weights domains by their share of the real CCNA. They separate whenever the paper's mix differs from Cisco's, which it always does to some degree. A two- or three-point gap in either direction is normal and is describing the shape of your knowledge rather than reporting an error. The worked example, with the arithmetic.
Does sitting a second CCNA paper reset my path?
No. Each paper produces its own path, and the cert-level view pools your latest sitting of every CCNA paper into one set of per-domain evidence. More papers means a larger sample per domain and a firmer ranking, so the reading improves rather than resetting.

What is the best order to study the CCNA domains in?
The best order is decided by your own result, not by a fixed list - two candidates on the same score can need opposite plans. Rank each domain by its Cisco weight multiplied by your shortfall and work the top one first. In practice that puts IP Connectivity first for most candidates, since at 25% it is the heaviest domain on the blueprint, with Security Fundamentals surfacing second more often than its 15% weight predicts.
What is the most efficient way to study for the CCNA?
Sit one full 103-question paper before you feel ready, then spend the following fortnight on the top two ranked domains only. That is the most efficient sequence because the CCNA blueprint is unusually uneven - IP Connectivity alone is a quarter of the exam - so an hour spent there is worth roughly two and a half hours spent in IP Services. A uniform pass across all six domains costs the same time for materially less score movement.
What is the ideal number of CCNA practice exams to sit?
Enough distinct papers that your smallest domain has around twenty questions behind it - on the CCNA that is three or four different papers, not a fixed number of sittings. Automation is 10% of a 103-question paper, so one sitting gives you roughly eight questions there, which is too thin for a verdict. Repeating one paper does not add to that count usefully.
