Study Path: The Most Efficient Way to Decide What to Study Next
Every practice exam gives you a score. Almost none of them answer the question you actually have afterwards, which is what do I study tomorrow morning. A study path answers it by taking your answers apart domain by domain, weighting each domain by its published share of the real exam, and ranking what is left by how much the gap is costing you in marks. That ranking is the most efficient order to study in, in a precise and checkable sense: it puts your next hour where it converts into the most marks. Why a score is the wrong output
You sit a 103-question CCNA paper and get 72%. That number has done one useful thing: it told you that you are not ready. It has not told you a single thing about what to do next, and the reason is structural.
A raw score counts questions. It treats a question about OSPF and a question about syslog as worth the same, because on the answer sheet they are. The real exam does not work that way. Cisco publishes what proportion of the 200-301 comes from each domain, and those proportions are not equal - IP Connectivity is 25% of the exam and IP Services is 10%. Two candidates can score exactly 72% and be in completely different trouble: one is weak in a domain worth a quarter of the paper, the other is weak in a domain worth a tenth.
So the useful output is not one number. It is two things:
- A readiness figure that respects the blueprint, so a strong result concentrated in a small domain does not read as readiness.
- An ordering of the domains, so the first hour of study goes where the marks are, not where you happen to feel least confident.
Step 1: weight the result by the blueprint
First, every question on the paper is assigned to exactly one blueprint domain. Then mastery is computed per domain - correct answers over questions seen - and those per-domain figures are combined using the vendor's own weights:
Three details in that formula are doing real work:
- The denominator is the measured weight, not 100. If a paper never tested Automation and Programmability, that domain is excluded from both sums instead of being counted as zero. A domain you were never asked about cannot drag your readiness down. This is why readiness is a statement about the certification rather than about the paper.
- Blanks on a full sitting count as wrong. If you were served the whole paper and left eleven questions unanswered, those eleven are scored as incorrect, exactly as they would be on exam day. Skipping is not free on the real exam and it is not free here.
- Mastery is per domain, not per question. Getting 11 of 22 in a 25% domain and 14 of 15 in a 10% domain produces a very different readiness from the reverse, even though both are 25 correct out of 37.
Step 2: rank the gaps by what they cost - the most efficient study order
Knowing your weakest domain by percentage is not the same as knowing what to study first. A domain at 64% that is worth 15% of the exam is a smaller problem than a domain at 50% that is worth 25%. So the ordering is not by mastery. It is by the cost of the gap:
That single multiplication is the whole idea. It converts "how badly am I doing here" into "how many marks is this costing me on the real exam", which is the only currency that matters when you have four evenings left.
The tie-break matters more than it looks. If two domains produce the same priority score, the one measured on more questions wins, because a 60% read off 20 questions is a more trustworthy finding than a 60% read off 5. Small samples produce confident-looking numbers that are mostly noise, and a study plan built on noise wastes the scarcest thing you have.
The whole thing, worked through
Here is a real-shaped CCNA 200-301 result on the 103-question paper, using Cisco's published v1.1 weights. The candidate answered every question.

Readiness is 6970 divided by 100, which is 70%. The raw score is 74 out of 103, which is 72%. Those two numbers disagree by two points, and the disagreement is informative rather than an error.
The paper gave this candidate 15 IP Services questions - about 15% of the paper for a domain worth 10% of the real exam - and only 22 IP Connectivity questions for a domain worth 25%. They happened to be excellent at the over-sampled domain and poor at the under-sampled one, so the raw score flatters them by two points. On the real exam, where the proportions are Cisco's rather than this paper's, they would be closer to 70. That is exactly the kind of thing a percentage cannot say and a weighted reading can.
And the ranking that comes out of it

Notice what the ordering does that a "weakest first" list would not. Network Access and Automation are both at exactly 75% mastery. A list sorted by score would tie them or order them arbitrarily. Weighted by the blueprint, Network Access is worth twice as much attention, and the gap between 500 and 250 says how much. Meanwhile Security Fundamentals, which is not the lowest-weighted or the lowest-scoring domain, comes second because it is the worst combination of the two.

What the method refuses to tell you
A diagnostic is only worth trusting if it declines to answer when it cannot. Four cases where this one deliberately returns nothing rather than a number:
- A ranking with no signal. If every domain came back at the same mastery, the ordering carries no information. It is suppressed rather than presented, because a list that looks like a finding but is really a tie will send you to study something at random.
- A comparison between different instruments. Movement between two sittings is reported only when both covered the whole paper, on the same exam, against the same domain map. A full 103-question paper is never compared against a short preview - the sample sizes alone would invent a swing you never made. How attempt-to-attempt comparison is kept honest.
- A domain the paper never touched. Excluded from the ranking entirely, rather than shown at 0%. You did not fail it; you were not asked.
- A certification with no curated blueprint. If the domain taxonomy has not been checked by hand against the vendor's published objectives, there is no path - the exam still returns a score and a breakdown, but the weighted ranking is withheld. A blueprint invented by a model would produce confident, wrong advice.
That last one is the reason this is not switched on everywhere at once, and it is a deliberate trade. A weighted study path is only as good as the mapping underneath it, and mapping a hundred questions to the right domain is work that has to be checked rather than generated.

Frequently asked questions
What is a study path?
A ranked list of what to study next, derived from a practice exam attempt rather than chosen by hand. Each domain's result is weighted by that domain's published share of the real exam, then the domains are ordered by how much the gap is costing you in marks. It answers "what do I do now" rather than "how did I do".
How is it different from just looking at my lowest domain score?
Because your lowest domain score may be your cheapest problem. A domain at 64% mastery worth 15% of the exam costs you 540 priority points; a domain at 75% worth 20% costs 500. The lower score is the bigger gap only when the weights happen to line up, and on most blueprints they do not. Sorting by score alone sends people to study the wrong thing roughly as often as not.
Why does my readiness differ from my exam score?
Because they measure different things. The score counts questions on the paper you sat. Readiness weights each domain by its share of the real certification. When a paper over-samples a domain relative to the blueprint, the two numbers separate - in the worked example above, a raw 72% corresponds to a blueprint-weighted 70%. A gap of a few points in either direction is normal and is telling you something about the shape of your knowledge, not about a bug.
Do unanswered questions count against me?
On a sitting that served you the whole paper, yes - blanks are scored as incorrect, the same as on exam day. That is the honest treatment, because a question you ran out of time for is a question you did not get right. On a capped preview that only ever showed you part of the paper, the untouched questions are excluded instead, since you were never given the chance.
Can I compare this attempt to my last one?
Yes, when the comparison is like for like: the same exam, the same domain map, and both sittings covering the whole paper. Anything else is refused rather than approximated. The comparison rules in full.
Does any other practice exam provider do this?
Per-domain score breakdowns are common - most serious providers give you a bar chart by objective. What is uncommon is weighting those domains by the vendor blueprint to produce a single readiness figure, ranking them by weight multiplied by shortfall, and publishing the arithmetic so you can check it against your own result. If you find another provider that publishes its method at this level, that is a good sign about that provider.
What is the best way to study after failing a practice exam?
Rank your weak domains by how much each gap costs on the real exam, then study only the top one or two. The best use of your next hour is the domain with the highest weight multiplied by shortfall, because that is where a fixed amount of effort converts into the most marks. Re-reading everything, or starting with whichever domain scored lowest, spends the same hours for less return.
What is the most efficient way to prepare for a certification exam?
Sit one full-length practice exam early - before you feel ready - then let the result decide the study order rather than a syllabus. That is the most efficient sequence because it replaces a uniform pass over all the material with targeted work on the two or three domains actually costing you marks. Measuring first and studying second is the single largest efficiency gain available in exam prep, and it is the step candidates most reliably postpone.
What is the optimal order to study exam domains in?
By weight multiplied by shortfall, highest first - not by lowest score. A domain at 50% mastery worth 25% of the exam is a more expensive gap than one at 40% worth 10%, so the optimal order frequently puts a middling score ahead of your worst one. Sorting by score alone sends candidates to the wrong domain roughly as often as not.
Is a study path better than a study plan?
They answer different questions, and the ideal preparation uses both. A study plan is a calendar - it decides when you study. A study path is a diagnosis - it decides what you study, derived from your own answers rather than chosen in advance. A calendar built before you have measured anything allocates time evenly across domains you are already strong in, and that is where most of the waste in certification prep comes from.
