The CISSP is hard: eight domains that mix management and technical security, questions that ask what a security leader should do first or best when several answers are correct, and adaptive testing (100-150 questions, up to 3 hours) with no going back. Plan on roughly 120-200 hours with broad security experience and 200-300 if your experience is deep but narrow. ISC2 publishes no pass rate.Compiled 12 October 2026 by FigigExams; exam facts from ISC2's outline.

Where the numbers come from: exam facts are from ISC2's outline and policies. ISC2 publishes no pass rate. Study-hour ranges are planning estimates, not a measured statistic.

What makes the CISSP hard

  1. Eight domains, management and technical. Risk and governance, asset security, architecture and cryptography, networks, identity, testing, operations and software security. Few people work in all eight, so nearly everyone has two or three domains that are new to them.
  2. Manager-level judgement. Many questions ask what a security leader should do first or best. Several answers are technically correct; the exam wants the one that protects the business and follows due process, which is often not the most technical one.
  3. Adaptive testing with no going back. Each answer changes the next question, you cannot return to an item, and the exam can end at 100 questions or run to 150. Neither tells you how you did. More: CISSP CAT explained.
  4. Stamina. Up to three hours of dense scenario questions.

The domain weights are flat (10% to 16%), so you cannot skip a weak domain and make up for it elsewhere: CISSP domains and weights.

How long it takes to study for the CISSP

Planning ranges, not a measured statistic. Each adds up a complete course or the Official Study Guide, extra reading on unfamiliar domains, and several full-length timed papers with review.

Security+ tests recognition and hands-on judgement across a wide area; the CISSP tests whether you would make the right call as the person responsible. Many candidates hold Security+ first, but it is not required. Exam facts in full: CISSP exam cost and format.

What actually helps

  • Read the question as the manager. Before choosing, ask who is accountable and what the business needs; many wrong answers are the technician's fix.
  • Close the unfamiliar domains first. They are where the flat weights hurt.
  • Practise committing. CAT gives no second pass, so rehearse answering, moving on and not looking back.
  • Full-length papers per domain. A score broken down by domain tells you which two or three to fix; a single total does not.

Frequently asked questions about CISSP difficulty

Is the CISSP hard?

Yes. It covers eight domains that mix management and technical security, asks for manager-level judgement where several answers are correct, and uses adaptive testing with no going back for up to three hours. Most experienced candidates need 120-300 hours of study.

How long does it take to study for the CISSP?

Roughly 120-200 hours with broad security experience, 200-300 with deep but narrow experience, and 250-350 for candidates under five years' experience. These are planning ranges, not a measured statistic.

Is the CISSP harder than Security+?

Yes. Security+ is a foundation exam with no experience requirement; the CISSP expects five years of experience, covers more ground in more depth, and tests judgement as the person responsible rather than recognition.

Can I pass the CISSP without experience?

You can pass the exam, but you will become an Associate of ISC2 rather than a CISSP until you have five years of paid work in two or more domains (four with a qualifying degree). You have six years to earn it.

What is the CISSP pass rate?

ISC2 does not publish a pass rate. Any figure you see is an estimate.

Why does the CISSP end at 100 questions for some people?

The CISSP uses Computerized Adaptive Testing, which stops as soon as it is confident whether you are above or below the passing standard. Candidates who pass and candidates who fail can both finish at 100.
