Which books match the outline you will sit
The CISSP outline in force has been unchanged since 15 April 2024, and ISC2 has not announced a refresh for 2027. The Official Study Guide (10th edition) and Official Practice Tests (4th edition) are written against it. The All-in-One's 9th edition dates from December 2021, so read it for depth on concepts that did not change and use the current outline as your checklist. All eight domains and their weights.
How to read for the CISSP
- Read one main book, domain by domain. The Official Study Guide is long enough on its own; a second full book is for depth, not coverage.
- Read for the manager's reasoning, not the facts. Most questions have two technically correct answers; the marked one protects people first, follows policy and fixes the root cause. See how the CISSP CAT works.
- Sit full-length papers from the halfway point and re-read only where your misses cluster.
A book does not tell you whether you would pass
The CISSP is an adaptive test of 100 to 150 items in up to three hours, passed at 700 of 1,000. Pair any book with full-length practice: FigigExams gives a complete 126-question exam free, written from the manager's perspective, and the pack is $39 once for 3 exams and 306 questions. Frequently asked questions about CISSP books
What is the best book for the CISSP?
The ISC2 CISSP Official Study Guide, 10th edition (Sybex), by Mike Chapple, James Michael Stewart and Darril Gibson. It is written against the outline in force since 15 April 2024 and includes 900+ online practice questions. Add the Official Practice Tests (4th edition, 1,300 questions) for volume.
Is the CISSP All-in-One outdated?
Its 9th edition dates from December 2021, before the outline that took effect on 15 April 2024. Most concepts carried over, so it still works for depth, but use the current outline as your checklist.
Do I need the Official Practice Tests as well as the Study Guide?
Not necessarily. The Study Guide already includes 900+ online questions. The Practice Tests add 1,300 more, organised by domain plus four full 125-question exams, which helps if you want more volume.
Is the Official Study Guide enough to pass the CISSP?
It covers every objective, but the CISSP tests judgement more than recall. Add practice questions written from a manager's perspective and review every miss for the reasoning.
Are there free CISSP books?
NIST's Cybersecurity Framework and SP 800 publications are free and underpin many CISSP concepts. FigigExams publishes a free CISSP study guide readable online, plus free CISSP flashcards.
