Why a bank you have already worked cannot measure you
Thor Pedersen publishes CISSP courses with substantial question banks attached, and they are well regarded. That creates a specific problem that has nothing to do with quality: once you have worked through a bank, you cannot use it to measure yourself again.
The second time you see an item you are partly recalling your previous answer rather than reasoning from knowledge. Scores climb, and the climb is real practice effect - but it is contaminated as a measurement. This is the single most common way candidates talk themselves into booking too early: three passes through a familiar bank, scores rising each time, and no idea how much of the rise is learning versus recognition.
The fix is not a better bank, it is an unseen one. A fresh full-length paper you have never met, sat once under time, is worth more as a readiness signal than a fourth run at material you have half-memorised. That is the job this page is for.
The adaptive format hides your standing on the day
CISSP is a computer-adaptive test (CAT): 100 to 150 items, a maximum of 3 hours, and a pass mark of 700 out of 1000. The algorithm adjusts item difficulty to your demonstrated ability and stops as soon as it is statistically confident either way.
The practical consequence catches people every time: finishing at 100 questions tells you nothing about whether you passed. The exam ends early when it is confident - and it can be confident in either direction. Candidates who walk out at item 100 convinced they failed have often passed, and the reverse happens too. The format also means the questions should feel hard throughout; an exam that feels easy is a worse sign than one that feels brutal.

The manager mindset is the real filter
CISSP's reputation for being "a mile wide and an inch deep" is accurate but misleading. The difficulty is not breadth, it is perspective. The exam wants the answer a security manager would give - risk-based, policy-first, people-and-process before technology - and technical candidates reliably pick the technically correct answer instead, which is scored wrong.
A worked example of the shift: asked how to handle a discovered vulnerability, the engineer's instinct is to patch it. The CISSP answer is usually to assess the risk, inform the data owner, and follow change management - patching is an implementation detail that comes after a decision someone else is accountable for.
This is the hardest thing to self-assess, and it is the thing an unseen bank measures best, because you cannot fall back on remembering which option was marked correct last time. Security+ and CISSP cover overlapping subject matter at completely different altitudes. Security+ asks what a control is and how it works; CISSP asks whether it is the right control given the risk, the budget and who is accountable.
